Abstract

This research examined the relationship between mental health and violent film content among young adults in Nigeria. The study was grounded in cultivation theory and observational learning and imitation behavior theory. Cultivation theory suggests that heavy television viewers adopt perceptions of reality based on the portrayals they see in movies or on television, influencing how they interpret actions and events in the world. Observational and imitation behavior theory proposes that many young adults imitate violent behaviors, aggressive orientations, and dispositions modeled by their favorite film and television characters. A qualitative descriptive approach was used to conduct an in-depth review of the literature, focusing on mental health among young adults and examining the societal and individual impacts of violent films on security and well-being in Nigeria. The researchers recommended implementing a regulated standard for acceptable levels of violent content in movies produced for public consumption, particularly those targeting young adult audiences in Nigeria.
