Abstract

The research aimed to determine the effectiveness of the Women Voices for Peace* radio program in the Niger Delta. A survey research approach was employed, with a questionnaire used as the data collection instrument. The study focused on Benin City, Warri, and Port Harcourt, using purposive sampling. A manageable sample of 400 respondents was selected as a representative sample. Findings revealed that respondents were highly exposed to Women Voices for Peace, and the level of exposure was substantial. Results further indicated that radio is an optimal medium for promoting peacebuilding. Additionally, it was found that community radio, through peace journalism, can foster peaceful coexistence in society, and radio programs are effective tools for peacebuilding in the Niger Delta. Based on these findings, the study concluded that Women Voices for Peace is significantly effective in communicating messages of peaceful coexistence in the Niger Delta region. Therefore, it was recommended that peacebuilders continue to utilize more radio programs for peace advocacy in conflict-prone regions in Nigeria, and that additional airtime be allocated to programs like Women Voices for Peace and other peacebuilding initiatives that target demographics such as youth and men. This approach will help deepen the understanding of all residents in the Niger Delta and other conflict-prone areas.
