Abstract

The researchers investigated the online communication of medical prescriptions and residents’ preferences and adoption patterns for improving healthcare service delivery in Akwa Ibom State. Grounded in the diffusion of innovation theory, this study employed a survey research method, using a questionnaire as the primary instrument. The sampling technique for this study was multi-stage cluster sampling, involving the systematic selection of 384 respondents from a total population of 2,516,750 across 9 Local Government Areas/villages spanning the 3 senatorial districts in Akwa Ibom State. Data were analyzed using simple percentages and presented in frequency distribution tables. Findings revealed a high awareness of online medical prescriptions among residents of Akwa Ibom State, with the majority displaying a positive attitude toward online communication for medical prescriptions. However, the frequency of adoption and usage of this innovation was regular. Based on these findings, it was recommended that healthcare facility staff in Akwa Ibom State redefine their outreach strategies, provide necessary health information to patients, and enhance service quality to prevent loss of patronage.
